I had met Suresh 20 years ago, on a trip to Dandeli, and being an avid photographer that I am,I had clicked some pictures for him and got in touch. That is where our journey started. I was looking for a financial planner and happened to meet Suresh during the trip. One of the good outcomes of the trip was that I got into financial planning engagement.

Sometime during the year 2009. the interest of getting a full-fledged financial plan arose after reading numerous articles on the subject in the papers. My interest was piqued going through the profiles of the different persons featured in the articles, their financial status, goals and the broad plan sketched out by the planner.

If there is one thing that I regret in life, it is about not investing early in my professional career that started in 1987. I did not know anything about Financial Stability let alone Planning. Accidentally meeting my BITS-Pilani batchmate Suresh Sadagopan in 2006 turned out to one of the biggest blessings ever. I am not aware of too many financial planners having their own financial planners. I am one of them and when I was looking for one, I went to Ladder7 after doing some basic homework of who would be the best one for me. I was put under the same process as any other client would have to go through. Having now completed the end to end process of the financial plan, I am pleased to say that the experience was very good and my finances are in order !

The first thing that stands out very visibly is that the process at Ladder 7s is very detailed and meticulous. So if there are 2-3 ways in which your insurance requirement can be calculated, it will be done in all 3 ways and shown to you. I haven’t seen many financial plans that do such a comprehensive exercise and give all the outputs to the client. In that sense, the information can be over bearing at times but more information is always better than less especially when your finances are concerned.

What also struck me as very different was the fact that justification of picking the products is documented in the plan in black and white. So if 2 mutual funds are being recommended, the plan tells you why. In that sense, the plan is a very comprehensive piece of bundle that you can refer to later and not think why things were done the way they were done. The cash flows are very detailed as well.

All facets of a plan namely the right insurance policies that I needed to have, how much money I needed for retirement and where I needed to invest my money were taken care of in a very satisfactory manner.

Revisions on the plan I requested for was swift.

Everybody is in the market to earn money. Everybody claims they work in the best interest of their clients – so called Relationship Managers of the large banks with whom we bank with, insurance agents, etc. I believe all the people of my age group have had their fair chance of bumping in such RMs and IAs until we understood their business model and in whose best interest they work for. We come across many financial professionals working as financial advisors to their clients.

Fund houses /Brokerage houses have deep pockets. It is easy for them to throw small percentage of investors’ money as commission to the financial advisors and earn their good will. Thus the schemes which offer higher commissions to the financial advisors are sold to investors which may not be suitable to the investor in realising his goals. Thus investor’s interest are compromised. Thus the conflict of interest takes root in their business model.

I was on the lookout for financial advisor who will genuinely work in my interest for a fee so that I can concentrate on what I do best and what I enjoy. Such financial advisors will be in the market purely for passion – passion to work in the best interest of their clients for fee. I love my job and I have passion for my work. For me money is secondary and it follows.

Thus I was looking for a team who has good work ethics and clean business model. It was through years of research and following Mr. Suresh Sadagopan that I decided to meet him and his team in their Office in Mumbai. We enjoyed the way they took us in their fold. They gave us number of models to choose from. The fee for each model was clearly laid out. We picked up the model which suited us the most.

We have been clients of Ladder7 since 2006. Influenced by an article that recommended having a professionally prepared financial plan, I emailed the planners who were mentioned in the write-up. Suresh was the first to respond and suggested that we meet to discuss and understand the financial planning process.

My wife and I were impressed by his acumen and his simplicity .. in a word we ‘connected’ and it has been a great relationship ever since. (v) While going through a recent health issue, the first person we spoke with was our planner who ran the numbers and reassured us that we could sustain our lifestyle even through a career break.
